When I first saw this book, I wasn’t sure about the plot of the story but I knew it was written based upon someone’s real life experience and that in itself interested me. Thanks to FlyBy Promotions, I was offered a copy of the book just in time to read it before the release of the new movie with the same title, 90 Minutes in Heaven! When the book arrived, I opened it to the center because I could tell there were pictures. When I saw the graphic photo of Don Piper’s Ford Escort, I realized what this story was about. I will be honest, although this post is really to give you the great news about the release of the new movie on September 11, I want to share my experience with the book and Mr. Piper’s story.
I’m not sure if any of you remember my story or not, but I was involved in a near fatal car accident on August 28, 2012. The accident was called in by the Florida Highway Patrol as a fatality – namely me. Unlike Don Piper, my situation was a bad call by the Florida Highway Patrol and I was never dead, but “only” very badly injured, transferred to a trauma center, and then a hospital and then a long road of recovery. Mr. Piper, on the other hand, was pronounced dead shortly following his automobile accident by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene. His body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes. Don’s soul, meanwhile, experienced love, joy and life like he’d never known before. Don was in Heaven.
When another pastor’s prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle! Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened. Heaven’s bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil. With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life. The Piper family’s incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of life – and death – will bring hope and encouragement to all who see it.
As a near-fatal accident survivor, I completely identified with Mr. Piper page by page, paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence for the first nearly 75 pages. He shares so much of exactly how it feels following an accident of this magnitude. His injuries were much more serious than mine, and his experience with recovery is far more severe than mine.
This book is an easy read and can be finished in a few hours. It puts into perspective the short time we dwell on Earth. It brings home how easily our lives can be snuffed out and the importance of living our lives to help others.
