Beginning of My Weight Loss Journey

2234_1071041226405_7637_n To give you some history:  It was 2007, and I had quit a 32-year smoking habit a few years earlier and wanted to lose some weight.  I bought a treadmill and started walking on it but I felt it was taking up too much of my time, so I started jogging a bit.  I realized if I moved even just a little faster, I’d burn even more calories and I would be finished even faster so I started running a bit.  I found that even though I was walking/jogging/slightly running, it was still boring since I was doing it alone on a treadmill.For some reason that I cannot even recall, in February of 2008 I participated in my first 5K finishing with a time of 49:19. Someone then suggested I take up running with a young girl in our neighborhood, and next thing I knew, I started running outdoors.  It was apparent that the running bug had taken a big bite and I was getting hooked. Over the course of the next few months, I ran several local 5ks and 10ks.  If I wasn’t participating in a race, I was running with my young friend.  I was up to running six consecutive miles and decided that would be enough to get me through a half marathon.

2194_1072736508786_8293_n So in February of 2009, I had participated in my first half marathon, the Sarasota Grouper Half Marathon, finishing with a time of 2:31:09.  This remains my PR to date.

By that time, I had already become a member of the local running club and got involved first as the editor to the newsletter and later as the Co-President.

Since I already qualified by participating in several half marathons, on March 13, 2011, I finally joined the Half Fanatics.  As of February of 2012, I had participated in my 12th half marathon to date and had others slated on my race calendar.
