After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to “listen” to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her. It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue. She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but they were helping her grow closer to God. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling.
Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless you with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure. To that end, she shares Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence, featuring devotions for every day of the year. In these powerful pages are the words and Scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Words of reassurance, comfort, and hope. Words that have made her increasingly aware of His presence and allowed her to enjoy His peace.
This remarkable book includes a year’s worth of daily readings from Young’s journals to bring you closer to Christ and move your time with Him from monologue to a dialogue.
A little over three years ago, I had the amazing privilege to be part of the leadership team at our church for a then-new-to-our-church ministry. We spent the first year as a small group learning everything we could about the ministry so that we could open our doors and share it with others. During this time, we watched the leadership team start with very high numbers, ending up a year later with a handful of us sticking with it and believing in it. That handful of us became much closer as friends in such an intimate setting.
While we were in the midst of this extensive learning and discovering process, one of the other leaders-in-training shared with us a daily devotional book she had found called Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. While I had never heard of the book, when Connie shared her daily readings with us, they really impacted me and I found myself getting the book for myself. As I said above, that was over three years ago and to this day, the daily devotional is a part of my everyday life. I have even gone so far as to posting some of the daily readings on my Facebook page to share with others. Year after year, it hasn’t gotten old. I find myself understanding the same reading from last year in an entirely different way the next time I read it, and that is such a blessing for me.
Each day Sarah Young shares a couple of small paragraphs of “life” with you, and applies two or three Bible verses. It doesn’t seem too difficult or deep, but I find myself thinking about the reading, meditating on it, and growing from it, seeing how it applies to my life.
Sarah Young was kind enough to also make a children’s version of the book based on her original best-selling book. This version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives. In Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids, the devotions are written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child’s heart.
