WOWOWOWOWOW!!! Yep, that’s how I’m starting this post! I had never previously heard of this author, B.A. Paris, and I was a bit apprehensive to start reading this book before some of the others on my list. Added to the unknown author fact, I’m not sure when it happened, but suddenly I realize that I prefer trade paperback sized books to hardbounds, so when this one was hardbound, I was worried about what was inside. Boy, did I judge a book by its cover, and boy, was I wrong!!
Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris is absolutely awesome! Yes, absolutely awesome! The story is all about the lives of Jack Angel and his wife, Grace. They are what everyone sees as the perfect couple. He’s a lawyer protecting the rights of abused women everywhere, and she’s a stay at home wife. He’s drop dead gorgeous and he dotes on his wife. She’s charming and elegant and it doesn’t seem there’s anything she can’t do from cooking, sewing and even painting. They are newlyweds who appear to be completely devoted to each other, they live in the perfect home that’s ready for their future family together.
At first, as I was reading along I was thinking to myself, “this lady is just too perfect, I can’t stand her”, but as I kept reading the story I wondered to myself whether she was really what readers were led to believe she was. Is it the perfect marriage, or is it the perfect lie?
This was giving me goosebumps with this creepy “stepford” couple and I didn’t see the story unfolding the way it did either. The author told the story in the present tense but provided flashbacks to the past, and it kept me guessing about the secrets that weren’t being told. I don’t want to go any further into the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but trust me when I tell you that once this book grabs you it won’t let you go until the last page.
I will say this: it is so hard to write a review of a glorious book without adding spoilers, which I do not add. That leaves the review a little vague in my opinion, so please, just read the book – it’s honestly a fantastic psychological thriller and it’s absolutely awesome. It’s way too hard to believe this is a debut novel from B.A. Paris. The story is so intelligently plotted and perfectly paced, that you’d think this author has been cranking out books for years. You can bet that I won’t miss the next book by B.A. Paris!
B. A. Paris is from a Franco/Irish background. She was brought up in England and worked in London for three years before moving to Paris, where worked in corporate banking and as a trader in an international bank. After the birth of her first daughter, she became a stay-at-home mother and went on to have another three daughters.
She spent four years in the Netherlands, where her fifth daughter was born. Returning to France, she decided to re-train as an English teacher and worked for some years in an international school and then at the Université de Marne la Vallée, teaching English to Architecture students. In 2009 she set up a language school with her husband and now teaches Business English in Paris.
I received a complimentary hardbound copy of this book from the publishers and BookSparks as part of the Fall Reading Challenge 2016 (#FRC2016) in exchange for this post, which is my honest review and unbiased opinion.
