I have never watched a movie starring Ashley Judd or Ray Liotta that I didn’t like. That’s why when I was offered The Identical without cost in exchange for my honest opinion, I was happy to say yes!
The Identical tells a compelling story of twin brothers separated at birth during the Great Depression. William and Helen Hemsley, played by Brian Geraghty and Amanda Crew, realize they can’t afford the twins since they can barely afford to feed themselves. William is led to a revival tent one night where the pastor, Reece Wade (played by Ray Liotta), shares his story with the congregation of his wife, Louise’s recent miscarriage and the fact that they cannot have children of their own. (Reverend Wade’s wife, Louise, is played by Ashley Judd.) In response, William Hemsley feels led by the Lord to give the pastor and his wife one of their twin boys.
As the two boys grow up in their separate environments, Drexel, the twin raised by the William and Helen, rises like a star and changes the music world forever. The pastor’s son, Ryan, struggles to please his father, who wants his son to follow the calling and pursue a career in the ministry. Ryan struggles to go to school and suppress his own desires.
In each of their own worlds, the brothers are passionate and are driven to develop and use their musical talent. In Ryan’s world, he eventually marries Jenny, played by Erin Cottrell. Jenny and Ryan’s friends encourage him to follow his musical dreams and his two lifelong friends, Dino and Avi (Seth Green and Joe Pantoliano) are very supportive.
The Identical spans five decades from the 1930’s through the 1970’s. It is a fascinating look at the restoration and the reconciliation of a family broken apart by cultural changes, religion and tradition. It is a lesson of love, hope, and redemption that speaks to people of all ages.
As Ryan struggles to pursue his dream and rise to stardom, he finds love, pain, success, failure and ultimately uncovers a hidden family secret that reveals who he really us. The movie takes an interesting turn when the destiny of each of the separated twins collide. Ryan discovers Drexel is more than just his inspiration – he is his identical twin brother. Ryan starts questioning everything he has ever believed about his family, his dream and his true destiny.
The Identical is a captivating story about a family restored and a life discovered. It moves you with its ups and downs and if you are anything like me, you will be moved by the turn of events in this story.
