Phenomenal Woman, Proverbs and “Woman Power”

Today while I was thinking about today’s post, I was still thinking about my recent trip to Hobby Lobby. There is this one Bible verse I love – well, there are hundreds that I love – but this one in particular hits me as a woman. Hobby Lobby has made it into a wall hanging and every time I end up in that store, I see it and think to myself “where could I hang that”?  Since I haven’t come up with anything yet, I’ll share it with you instead.

The verse comes from the book of Proverbs at chapter 3, verse 25:

I really love that verse, and it also reminds me of a poem I saw written by Maya Angelou. I thought today would be a great day to post it and share it with anyone who might have not seen it before…

Phenomenal Woman – BY MAYA ANGELOU

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
The palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
—Maya Angelou

To wrap up what I’ve suddenly realized is my “Woman Power” day, I will leave you with this little sign I found on Pinterest. It really reminds me to think about the woman I am and the woman I need to strive to be!

I know I am not perfect, but I also know that I am headed in the right direction. Just last night I found myself attempting to console someone who was in a bad place. The old me would have fled and avoided the whole situation, so it was really out of character for me to try to be consoling. I wasn’t able to actually be consoling to that person, but the fact that it was my first thought actually shows growth in my life, and for that, I’m grateful, but I know I still have a long way to go……

Are there are any Bible verses, poems or saying out there that motivate you, or move you to be a better woman? If so, I’d love to hear them!
